Before the stellar reviews, before the passionate raves from bloggers, before the awards, and before the bestseller lists, independent booksellers have been the first to consistently discover your great next read.

Each month, the Indie Next List highlights the best writing in fiction and nonfiction for readers of all tastes and ages.

Here's the latest list, and, if you're a bookseller, tell us what you will be passionately hand selling in the coming weeks and months. (And here are the 2009 bookseller nomination deadlines.)

Indie booksellers, publishers, and everyone else has been flocking to Twitter, a free "microblogging" service. Twitter posts may be informative, supportive, or quirky, but they must be no longer than 140 characters.

Twitter can be used to announce upcoming events or new blog posts, to handsell a favorite title (with a link to the store website), or to brainstorm new ideas with peers.

ABA has put together a Bookseller's Guide to Twitter to get you started. And if you join the flock, ABA users hope that you will let us know so that we can follow you.

ABA is asking members who no longer need their Winter Institute registration to let us know. Wi4 is booked to capacity, and booksellers who are interested in attending are being added to a waiting list.

Open exclusively to ABA Bookstore and provisional members, Wi4 will feature a wealth of new programming and will be held from January 29 through February 1 in Salt Lake City.

And the presenters, panelists, and moderators for Wi4 have been announced...

ABA and 10 other independent trade groups have written the states that collect sales tax to urge them to equitably enforce existing tax law and collect sales tax on online sales. With many states facing budget shortfalls, this is a great time for booksellers to write their state's elected officials in support of E-Fairness.

Here's an update from the booksellers' perspective, more about how you can join the fight, and an example of an effective letter.
