Rogers: Tuskegee Airmen
Memorial Much Deserved Tribute
Attends Grand Opening of National Park Service Attraction

WASHINGTON, D.C.  -  Congressman Mike Rogers said he was honored to be a part of history today as he participated in the Grand Opening of the new Tuskegee Airmen National Memorial at historic Moton Field in Macon County.

The $28 million National Park Service memorial, estimated to draw thousands of new visitors to Macon County each year, helps pay tribute to the brave African Americans who fought for our nation during World War II. The site includes historic buildings and exhibits and will serve as an educational resource for generations to come upon its completion.

“Our nation owes the Tuskegee Airmen our deepest sense of gratitude for their sacrifices and bravery,” Rogers said. “This memorial is a testament to the Tuskegee Airmen’s selfless service to our nation overseas, despite the injustices they faced back home.”

Earlier this year, Rogers cosponsored legislation honoring the 60th anniversary of the integration of the Armed Forces. That resolution, which included a tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen, passed the House of Representatives overwhelmingly on July 14, 2008. He said the occasion was further honored in a ceremony in the United States Capitol Rotunda in July.

“The legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen is a critical part of our heritage in East Alabama. I am deeply honored our nation is fulfilling its commitment to their legacy, and hope this historic site will help educate generations of Americans about the important role these men played in defending our nation and securing our freedom,” Rogers said.

Since 2003, Congressman Rogers has helped secure over $13 million for the Tuskegee Airmen National Memorial. Rogers serves on Armed Services, Agriculture and Homeland Security Committees.
