Rogers Announces $140,000 for
Fort Mitchell Restoration
Would help restore historic Russell County site

Washington, DC  -  Congressman Mike Rogers said today the Russell County Historical Association should receive $140,000 to renovate several historic buildings at Fort Mitchell, an initiative which could help preserve the site for future generations.

Rogers said he earmarked the funds for Russell County in an appropriations bill conference report which passed the House of Representatives Thursday.

“Fort Mitchell is an important treasure for our state and our nation,” Rogers said. “I am pleased to have helped secure these funds for the people of Russell County, and hope the restoration of this site will ultimately help preserve more of its history for generations to come.”

Rogers said the funds were contained in H.R.2361, the Conference Report to the Fiscal Year 2006 Interior Appropriations Bill, which passed the House 410-10. He said the bill is in its final form and will now be sent to the Senate, where it is expected to pass. The bill would then be sent to the president for his signature.

“I certainly appreciate the assistance of Senators Shelby and Sessions in moving this project forward,” Rogers added.

Rogers said the original Fort Mitchell was the site of two frontier military outposts from 1813-1840, and is known as the embarkation point for the Lower Creek Nation onto the “Trail of Tears.” The Veterans Administration operates a military cemetery near the site, which has served as the final resting place for veterans since 1813.
