Summary

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on Department of Defense, Army, Navy, Air Force, and defense agencies' actual or estimated information technology obligations from fiscal year (FY) 1986 through FY 1990.

GAO found that: (1) information technology obligations ranged from about $7.46 billion in FY 1986 to an estimated $8.89 billion for FY 1990; and (2) most obligations fell into the commercial services expenditure category, followed by personnel, capital investments, rental, and other services categories.
