Beginning with Oklahoma! (1943) and Carousel (1945), Richard
Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II ushered in what has been called
the Golden Age of the American musical--integrating song, dance,
and drama in the context of serious subject matter and characters.
They wrote many songs that have become popular standards; "Some
Enchanted Evening" from South Pacific (awarded the
Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1950) is one of their best known.
