NJAC Court Security Bill Advances in Assembly
Trenton - Legislation that would provide funding for security improvements at county courthouses advanced recently in the Legislature.
The bill, A-2760, which NJAC strongly supports, was passed last week by the Assembly Judiciary Committee. It now awaits action by the Assembly Budget Committee.
Sponsored in the lower house by Assemblywoman Nellie Pou, D-Passaic, the measure would increase certain court filing fees to create a dedicated funding source for upgrading courthouse security. Currently such improvements must be made by counties without aide from the state, which increases budget strains for county governments.
PROSECUTOR BILL GAINS SPONSOR IN SENATE TRENTON -- Legislation that would allow counties to cap prosecutor spending at four percent has attracted bi-partisan support in the state Senate. A major priority for counties, the legislation would help to control runaway spending over which Freeholder Boards now have virtually no control.
The bill, S-1836, was introduced recently by state Senator Steve Sweeney, D-Gloucester. Republican Joe Kyrillos recently signed on as a co-sponsor, a move that county officials hope will give it momentum in the Legislature.
