Speaker Biography: Joseph Ellis is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Founding Brothers" and "American Sphinx," his biography of Thomas Jefferson that won the 1997 National Book Award. He is the Ford Foundation Professor of History at Mount Holyoke College. Educated at the College of William and Mary and Yale University, he served as a captain in the army and taught at West Point before coming to Mount Holyoke in 1972, where he was dean of the faculty there for ten years. He lives in Amherst, Mass., with his wife, Ellen, and their three sons. Annette Gordon-Reed, a professor of law at New York Law School since 1992, is author of "Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy," "Race on Trial: Law and Justice in American History" and "Vernon Can Read!: A Memoir," which she coauthored with presidential confidant and long-time civil rights leader Vernon Jordan. She began her career as an associate at Cahill Gordon & Reindel and as Counsel to the New York City Board of Corrections. At Dartmouth College, she majored in history, graduating in 1981, and attended Harvard Law School, where she was a member of the Law Review. She lives in Manhattan with her husband, daughter and son.
