When You Arrive
The Orientation Galleries
The best place to begin a visit to the Library of Congress is the Orientation Gallery. Upon arrival, visitors can request information on the new Library of Congress Experience and related tours and exhibitions, as well as the many other public programs that the Library sponsors.
Entry and Exit Procedures
All visitors entering any Library building must pass through a metal detector and have their belongings screened by an x-ray machine. All those exiting any Library building must pass through an electronic theft detection system and open all bags, etc., for inspection.
Special Needs Access
All Library buildings are fully accessible. The ADA entrance for visitors to the Jefferson Building is at the Driveway level below the Grand Staircase.
Group Access
Groups and Congressional constituents with reservations should go to the Jefferson Building Driveway level entrance below the Grand Staircase to be checked in.
Visitor Guidelines
Visitors to the Library of Congress must conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the purposes and functions of the Library. The established guidelines will give you ideas on how to maintain the peace, tranquility, and good order of the Library.
Student Groups
Chaperones must remain with student groups at all times. The Library asks that one adult accompany every eight to ten students. Chaperones should review the guidelines with their groups before touring the Library. Student groups must maintain orderly behavior during their visits.
Cloakrooms
The Library has three cloakrooms throughout the campus. The Cloakroom designated for visitors is located on the Ground Floor of the Jefferson Building. It is open from 10 a.m.. to 5 p.m., but is available to reserved tour participants who may arrive as early as 8:30 a.m.
