Hoyer Statement on the Fifth Anniversary of 9/11

"This Is a Day of Remembrance and Resolve"

WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today, the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001:

"Today, our nation and our people commemorate the fifth anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in America's history.  This is a solemn day for all Americans to pause and to remember the innocent men, women and children who perished or were injured due to the evil acts of men consumed by a murderous ideology.  We will never forget those who were lost or injured.

"9/11 also is a day to honor the courage and heroism of the first responders – and in some cases the civilians turned rescuers – who selflessly put their own lives in harm's way as they sought to help their fellow citizens.  In the aftermath of this treacherous attack on 9/11, thousands of Americans have worked – and continue to work – tirelessly to improve our nation's security and to protect our people.  They deserve our praise and our thanks.

"Finally, 9/11 is a day of resolve.  The horrific attacks of 9/11 awakened our nation and the American people to a mortal danger that threatens our way of life and our very existence.  We are resolved to protect the American people and our homeland; we have no higher duty.  We also are absolutely committed to the defeat of terror and tyranny, and the advance of freedom, democracy, the rule of law and tolerance."
