Hoyer: Bush Economy Not Working for the Middle Class

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in response to Republican efforts to spin new job numbers released today:

"President Bush and Republicans would like nothing more than to have Americans look at today's jobs report in a vacuum.  But the American people are much too smart for that.  No amount of spin or Administration happy-talk can erase the fact that this Administration has the worst record of job creation since the Great Depression, with the loss of nearly 3 million manufacturing jobs.  In the 1990s, under President Bill Clinton, the economy created almost 220,000 jobs every month on average.

"Moreover, today's unemployment report does nothing to alleviate the real and justified economic insecurity felt by millions of American families, who are dealing with quickly increasing health care costs and college expenses and a $1,300 drop in the real median income.

"Unfortunately, the Bush economic program is not working for the overwhelming majority of Americans and instead has spawned record budget deficits and a spiraling national debt."
