WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today regarding the announcement by Rep. William Janklow (R-SD) that he plans to resign from Congress on January 20. Congressman Janklow’s announcement came one hour after a jury found him guilty of felony manslaughter:
“This is obviously a painful day for Congressman Janklow, but I believe that he has done the right thing by announcing that he will resign from Congress. The jury has spoken and it has reaffirmed the most basic principle in the American system of justice: All of us, even a Member of Congress and a former governor, are equal in the eyes of the law. Because South Dakota has only one seat in the House, it is absolutely imperative that a special election to fill it be held as soon as practicable.”
