Hoyer Statement on Rep. Martin Sabo's Retirement

WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Rep. Martin Sabo (D-MN) announced he would be retiring after serving fourteen terms in the United States Congress:

     “With Martin Sabo’s retirement announcement, Minnesota’s 5th District is losing a tireless advocate, and the Democratic Caucus is losing a solid voice of reason.  I have immensely enjoyed serving with my friend Martin for over 20 years, and am proud to have had the opportunity to work with him on a wide range of issues, in particular on the Appropriations Committee. 

     “After the attacks of September 11, 2001, homeland security became an issue at the forefront of America’s national security and protecting American citizens.  Democrats – and the American people – were truly fortunate to have a Member of Congress as dedicated, experienced, tenacious, and passionate as Martin serving as the Ranking Member on the Homeland Security Subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee. 

     “Martin also worked to ensure that future generations of Americans would not be saddled with debt through his principled work as Chairman of the House Budget Committee during the 103rd Congress.  Under his leadership, the Committee was able to pass the country’s largest deficit-reduction package, a sensible set of guidelines that helped lead to the historic surpluses of the 1990s.  

     “I wish Martin and his family the very best in his well-deserved retirement.  His legacy of fighting for the security of the American people will continue to be the fight of Congressional Democrats.”
