9/19/07: Senator Dodd calls on House Energy and Commerce Committee Not to Surrender on Children’s Health

Senator urges colleagues to maintain compromises on the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act and the Pediatric Research Equity Act

Today, Senator Dodd called on the House Energy and Commerce Committee to stay strong on children’s health by ensuring that the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act (BPCA) maintains the compromise reached by House and Senate Democrats.  The compromise called for reducing pediatric exclusivity from 6 months to 4.5 months.


9/18/07: Dodd’s Fight to Protect State Mental Health Insurance Laws Pays Off

Senate passes historic federal Mental Health Parity legislation for the first time in more than ten years.

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), a senior Democrat on the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) and chairman of its Subcommittee on Children and Families, today lauded unanimous Senate passage of S. 558, the Mental Health Parity Act of 2007.  If enacted into law, the Mental Health Parity Act would help ensure that all Americans who have insurance coverage for physical ailments such as a broken limb will also have comparable coverage for a mental illness.  Previously, Dodd voiced strong concerns about the bill and its impact on Connecticut which has strong mental health parity and consumer protection laws.


9/14/07: Dodd Announces New Funds to Fight Methamphetamine in Connecticut

Today, Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) lauded the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) announcement of $450,000 in grants for Connecticut to fight the manufacture, use, and distribution of methamphetamine. The COPS Methamphetamine Initiative will provide $43.6 million to 117 different state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to combat methamphetamine use.


8/23/07: Dodd, Reed React to FDA’s Proposed Sunscreen Labeling Rule

Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Jack Reed (D-RI) today reacted to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) announcement of a new proposed rule on sunscreen labeling that would require sunscreens to protect against UVA rays along with UVB.  Under current standards, the FDA does not require that sunscreen protect against UVA rays, which are a major cause of skin cancer and premature aging.  


8/22/07: Dodd Announces Proposal to Expand State Children’s Health Insurance Program

Sends Letter Urging Conferees to Overturn Unreasonable New Requirements Imposed by Bush Proposal

Washington, D.C. – In response to the Bush Administration’s recent announcement of new policies that will make it harder for states to insure children, Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) today announced that he intends to introduce legislation to strengthen and expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) after Congress reconvenes in the fall.  Dodd’s proposal would allow states to provide health insurance to a greater number of children from poor and working families without waiting for federal government approval.  It would also allow states to expand SCHIP benefits to children between the ages of 19 and 21 and would provide incentive payments to states for successfully enrolling children in SCHIP who fall in the lowest state income brackets.


8/17/07: Dodd Sends Letter To President, Repeats Call For Suspending Imports From China, Cites Safety Concerns

August 17, 2007

A day after calling for a suspension of food, toy and pet food imports from China, Senator Chris Dodd sent a letter to President Bush urging him to protect the health and safety of American families by temporarily suspending these imports until the Chinese Government can ensure an adequate inspection procedure has been implemented.

Senators Introduce Bill to Make Safety Guidelines Mandatory

Senators Mark Pryor (D-AR), Ted Stevens (R-AK) and Chris Dodd (D-CT) today introduced legislation to help prevent children from drowning in pools, which is the second leading cause of accidental injury-related deaths to children under age of 14.


7/11/07: Dodd, Lieberman Hail Subcommittee Passage of Appropriations Bill to Secure Millions for Connecticut Programs

Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) applauded legislation approved on June 28 by the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies that will provide funding for afterschool and gang prevention programs for Connecticut youth, equipment upgrades for Connecticut’s public safety systems, and research initiatives at the Institute of Exploration in Mystic, CT, among other things.  Dodd and Lieberman worked to secure funding for Connecticut projects in the bill that will provide more than $4.5 million in new federal funds for initiatives statewide.


6/28/07: Dodd, Hagel, Schumer Introduce Bill to Combat Lyme Disease

Legislation creates Tick-Borne Diseases Advisory Committee to expand research and prevention

Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT), Chuck Hagel (R-NE), and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today introduced legislation to expand federal efforts to fight Lyme disease.  The Lyme and Tick-borne Disease Prevention, Education and Research Act of 2007 would create an Advisory Committee to better fight Lyme disease, and would provide $20 million per year for research, education, prevention, and treatment of this often debilitating disease.


6/08/07: Dodd, Kennedy, Domenici Introduce Legislation to Promote Children's Mental Health

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), along with Senators Pete Domenici (R-NM) and Edward Kennedy (D-MA) this week introduced The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Resiliency Act of 2007, a bill that promotes children’s mental health and seeks to increase both the quality of and access to services for those affected.  Senators Dodd, Domenici, and Kennedy have a long history of support for mental health initiatives.  Earlier this year the Senators introduced the Mental Health in Schools Act, legislation that would provide additional and improved opportunities for public school children to get the mental health services they may need.
