Whitfield Announces Funds to Improve Emergency Response Services in McLean County
October 16, 2008
WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield (KY-01) announced today that the McLean County Fiscal Court has been awarded a $31,339 grant from the Delta Regional Authority for their Comprehensive GIS/GPS Project. The funds will be used to improve communications between emergency responders in the county and will help in alerting and informing residents of affected areas in the event of a disaster.
"When disasters strike and emergencies occur, it is critical that our first responders have the tools and information they need to quickly react and find their way to the scene," Whitfield said. "With this grant, McLean County emergency services will be able to gather important geographical information that will help them quickly locate and respond to individuals in need."
The grant will be used to fund a contract between McLean County and Green River Area Development District to collect information for 6,500 buildings and structures in the area. This data will include the addresses of the buildings, roof style, exterior composition, number of floors, apartment number and address location. The collection and utilization of this data will enable McLean County emergency services to more quickly mobilize and respond to disasters.
The Delta Regional Authority receives federal funds each year, which it then makes available to states to help with job growth and development.
