The South Carolina Wildlife Federation has recognized U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC) as the group’s 2006 Legislator of the Year at the group’s 42nd annual meeting and awards banquet at Pawley’s Island.

Inglis said he was honored by the recognition and noted some of his views have changed.

“During my first term in Congress, I and others gave little weight to climate change claims. Now, I believe it is a serious issue that we need to address," Inglis said. "I hope now more in my party will see conservation as a part of our heritage."

Since being re-elected to Congress, Inglis has worked to gain bi-partisan support to promote hydrogen and fuels of the future in breaking the country’s addiction to oil.

"The greatest impact we can make is to accelerate our drive to a hydrogen economy," he said. "Getting off fossil fuels and onto alternatives will be a major game changer for national security, the environment and job creation."

A trip to Antarctica last January gave Inglis a first-hand look at the seriousness and growing threat of global warming. Scientists at the North Pole gave the Science Committee delegation extensive evidence from on-going studies and research at the National Science Foundation funded McMurdo and South Pole Research Stations.

Inglis has also recognized a correlative link and need for conservationists and environmentalists to work together because at the end of the day “both groups want the same thing."
