(FORT STEVENSON STATE PARK, N.D.) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) met with officials and toured progress on the new marina here Saturday. He said the project will be good both for North Dakota’s tourism industry and local residents who use the lake for recreation.

Dorgan, Chairman of the Senate Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee, led the effort to convince the Army Corps of Engineers to improve lake access at Fort Stevenson State Park. He secured a commitment from the Corps in 2004 to build a new marina at Garrison Bay, and then moved legislation through Congress to clear bureaucratic hurdles that popped up along the way.

Dorgan secured $10 million in federal funding for construction of the marina. He has also secured $2.66 million to improve access at other points around Lake Sakakawea.

“Lake Sakakawea is an important resource for North Dakota residents and our tourism industry. But if we don’t have usable boat ramps in place, we aren’t getting the full economic benefit,” Dorgan said. “I’m going to keep following this issue to make sure we have the infrastructure we need here at Fort Stevenson and around Lake Sakakawea.”
