(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) issued the following statement today regarding the farm bill’s passage in the Senate.

TEXT OF STATEMENT
BY SENATOR BYRON DORGAN
May 15, 2008

“It has been a good two days for America’s farmers and ranchers. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives have passed the farm bill by veto-proof margins.

“I am pleased that the bill strengthens payment limits and expands country of origin labeling and includes funding for energy programs.

“In addition, I have been working for years to re-establish a permanent disaster title for our farmers and ranchers and it is a real success to have this provision included in the final language here.

“The farm bill has gone down a long and tortured trail. Yet again, President Bush has threatened to veto it. That’s unfortunate, but I think whatever the President decides is not going to be very relevant. Both the House and Senate passed this bill by wide margins and I’m confident we have the votes to override a veto.

“This bill is long overdue. I believe that we now have a strong farm bill that’s good for family farmers and ranchers. I also give great credit to my colleagues, Kent Conrad and Earl Pomeroy, for their hard work on this bill.”
