JFK Profile in Courage Award In 2000, Congresswoman Solis became the first woman to receive John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for her pioneering work on environmental justice issues in California and her relentless, successful struggle to protect the families of the San Gabriel Valley against harmful toxins. The Profile in Courage Award, the nation’s most prestigious honor for public servants, was established in 1989 by members of President Kennedy’s family to celebrate courageous acts by public servants and to encourage elected officials to choose principles over partisanship. Other recipients of this award include U.S. Rep. John Lewis, President Gerald Ford, and Senators Russell Feingold and John McCain.
