The Ninth Congressional District includes the twenty-two counties and five cities which together comprise Virginia's western region -- an area most often referred to as Southwest Virginia. With approximately 9,000 square miles of land within its borders, the Ninth District is one of the largest congressional districts situated east of the Mississippi River.
Southwest Virginia was among the first areas of the great American interior to settled; as early as 1765, settlements were being built to accommodate a steady stream of travelers moving from the seacoast westward through the Cumberland Gap.
The region posses rare treasures of Virginia's natural heritage, with the state's tallest mountains, most interesting rivers, and most spectacular landscape. Southwest Virginia also boasts some of the most varied hunting, camping, fishing and backpacking opportunities available anywhere in the Southeast.
