Many Nebraskans have served America in the Armed Forces. They have done so dutifully without fanfare or celebrity. Their sacrifice is borne of true patriotism, a love and respect for this nation that has offered and given so much. In the faces of the servicemen and servicewomen I encounter, I see their spirit and their pride.

Each time I fly home from Washington to Nebraska I look out the airplane window over the magnificent national monuments of our nation’s capital. Their beauty and grandeur, so thoughtfully designed, portray the history of our great nation.

You all know the scene well. Dotted across the prairie they stand like guardians of a distant past. These creaking vestiges once helped deliver a precious resource – water – for farm families. Farm windmills. Remnants of the past, they now represent a new vision for the future.

The city of Lincoln Sunday paid tribute to those who tragically lost their lives September 11, 2001, and honored those who defend America today. Light rain fell as we watched the Honor Guard of the Lincoln Police Department make presentation of the colors. A crowd of people huddled close in the midst of Lincoln’s beautiful Veterans Memorial Garden.

On Thursday, August 10, 2006, my office will sponsor an educational conference on renewable energy, An Energy Conversion: Making Renewable Energy America’s Energy, in conjunction with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The event will focus on five key areas of renewable energy production: ethanol, biodiesel, biomass, wind energy, and public policy assistance.

Recently, I traveled throughout eastern Nebraska meeting with hundreds of Nebraskans with backgrounds and interests as diverse as the Nebraska landscape. From community leaders in Lincoln and Fremont to Omaha Tribal Council Members, we had a number of very constructive meetings.

Nebraskans have a wonderful opportunity to take part in a public farm policy field hearing of the House Agriculture Committee this Saturday, March 4th, in Nebraska City. This is a first for Nebraska’s First District!
