While the official start of the winter season is still about eight weeks away, New Yorkers know that winter storms can strike at any time. October 26-November 1 is Winter Weather Awareness Week in New York State. New Yorkers everywhere are encouraged to take some time during the week’s observance to start preparing for the upcoming season by taking some common sense safety actions now. Visit our Winter Preparedness page for information you should know in order to be prepared for the winter months ahead.
The NYS Office of Fire Prevention & Control and the State Emergency Management Office urge you to:
Make sure that you have working carbon monoxide and smoke alarms properly installed in your home. The changing of the clocks on Sunday, November 2, for the end of Daylight Saving Time is the perfect occasion to check both smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and replace their batteries if needed.

SEMO's monthly newsletter, the Emergency Management Times, is now available online.
Every community's level of preparedness begins with its individual families and businesses. Take time to learn how you can be better prepared to protect yourself and your loved ones. Develop emergency plans and make certain that proper emergency supplies are readily available at home, at work or anywhere else that you and your family spend time.
It pays to Be Prepared!
