Dreier Statement on House Select Committee’s Report on Illegal Immigration Vote
September 25 , 2008
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA), Ranking Republican of the House Rules Committee, issued the following statement today regarding the final report of the House Select Committee to Investigate the Voting Irregularities of August 2, 2007, which confirmed the vote taken that night remains incorrect:
“The work of the Select Committee confirms what many of us have known since August 2, 2007 - the vote that occurred on the motion to recommit on the Agriculture Appropriations Bill was not correct and was handled poorly by the Democratic Leadership of the House. As the Select Committee has reported today, the vote remains wrong and therefore illegitimate. Sadly, this yet another black eye for the Democratic Majority of the House and their management of this institution, which has been anything but open and honest.
“The entire membership and staff of the Select Committee deserves the thanks of the American people for taking the time to investigate what happened on this vote, get to the bottom of it, and come forward with an honest assessment of what went wrong and how to prevent it from happening again. I applaud their recommendations that the Rules of the House and the Speaker’s Policies reflect the importance of a non-partisan voice being key to determining the final outcome of a vote. It’s critical to our democracy that the rules that govern our debate are honored and respected.”
