Washington, Feb 6, 2006 -

Congresswoman Thelma Drake (R-VA) announced today that the Norfolk Fire & Rescue Company was awarded $129,888 in federal grant money through the Department of Homeland Security’s Fire 2005 Prevention and Safety Grant Program (FP&S). Also receiving federal funding in 2005 were the local fire departments for the cities of Virginia Beach ($144,000), Greenbackville ($23,750), and Bloxom ($92,150) through the Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The most effective way to keep our families safe from fires has always been through prevention,” said Rep. Drake. “The funding provided through this grant will aid the Norfolk Fire & Rescue Company in their mission to raise fire prevention awareness. It will also allow for greater investment in the equipment and technologies needed to protect those firefighters whose courage we rely on in the case of an emergency.”

Norfolk Fire & Rescue Company was one of 35 fire departments throughout the country to receive funding in the first round of the Fiscal Year 2005 FP&S grant program. This round of grant awards supports fire prevention and safety efforts that focus on the safety of high-risk target groups, such as children, seniors, and firefighters.

FP&S will ultimately issue approximately 400 awards worth nearly $32.5 million. Many of these awards represent innovative solutions for the delivery of fire prevention activities throughout the United States. In addition, FP&S grants support research focusing on ways to improve the safety and health of firefighters.

The Fire Prevention and Safety Grant Program is administered by the Department’s Office of Grants and Training (G&T) in cooperation with the United States Fire Administration.
