Dreier Praises Bipartisan Passage of Iraq Resolution
December 16, 2005
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-CA), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, praised today’s bipartisan passage of a resolution commending the Iraqi people and our troops for Iraq’s third successful election this year, while affirming the House’s commitment to securing victory there. H. Res. 612 was approved today with bipartisan support, 279-109, with 34 members voting present.
"Yesterday’s vote was a historic success and cause for celebration in Iraq and here at home. This resolution praises the courage of the Iraqi people and their resiliency in the face of terrorism. It also commends the work of the Iraqi Security Forces in securing the elections. They are clearly making remarkable progress.
"At the same time, we recognize that our job in Iraq is not done. We hear that from our troops on the ground, as well as Iraqi leaders. An arbitrary time line for withdrawal cannot be dictated from Washington. We need to leave that up to the experts who are on the ground and in the fight. I am very pleased the House made this statement today with a bipartisan vote. With continued support from the Congress and the American people, our troops will be able to complete their mission and leave behind a stable democracy in the heart of the Middle East. And that will be a remarkable victory."
