Latin America is experiencing a positive revolution of sorts. Petty military dictators and East-West ideological struggle are things of the past. Political inclusion has expanded massively through overwhelmingly democratic processes, and millions of South and Central Americans have new expectations of their governments. Like anywhere, democracy in the region is sometimes messy, and mistakes are sometimes made. But the change is good.

While Congress and the Bush administration work to get our markets moving again so that small businesses can make payroll and families living paycheck to paycheck can put food on the table, the foreclosure crisis at the heart of this economic crisis continues to unfold. Before the spectacular fall of Wall Street giants such as Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers, millions of Americans were suffering through a financial catastrophe of their own. Today, nearly 10,000 families go into foreclosure on a daily basis, while millions more suffer from plummeting home values, taking a terrible toll not only on their cumulative wealth but their sense of confidence in what the future holds for their children.

2/05/08: Strengthen Family and Medical Leave Act by allowing Americans paid time off work

On Tuesday, The Hill published the following op-ed by Senator Chris Dodd on strengthening FMLA by allowing Americans paid time off work. Senator Dodd is a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

It wasn’t so long ago that trying to get time off could get you fired.


That’s what I learned from Eva Bunnell when I met her at church in East Haddam, Conn., in 1989. Eva’s daughter Jacinta had been born with a rare brain disease and was fighting for her life in the ICU. Her husband asked his employer for time off to be at the side of his wife and baby. And he was told to never come back — leaving the family without an income, without health insurance, and almost without hope.


7/03/07: What others are saying: Unfinished business

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch published the following editorial on June 27, 2007 expressing support for the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act.


An estimated 5,000 lynchings took place during the Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras. Most went unsolved, but some of the people responsible for those and other horrific race murders are still alive. There is still time to hold them accountable.
