I formed the Congressional COPD Caucus in January of 2004 to raise awareness of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and the threat it poses to our families and communities. It is estimated that over 16 million Americans suffer from COPD. The COPD Caucus is a way to educate people about the disease and its challenges.

To address the needs of patients with COPD, the Caucus has taken the lead on a number of initiatives. I recently introduced S. 329, the Pulmonary and Cardiac Rehabilitation Act. This legislation would formally establish pulmonary rehabilitation as a specific Medicare benefit category. Rehabilitation is a well-documented, proven therapy for certain patients with moderate to severe COPD. I have also worked to make it easier for COPD patients to travel by air. These patients are often burdened by outdated regulations and restrictions. I have also fought to ward off Congressional cuts to oxygen therapy, so that patients have access to this important Medicare benefit. I will continue to advance these and other important efforts on behalf of COPD patients and their families.

I am working closely with the American Lung Association, the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Association for Homecare and others to build a cohesive message addressing the needs of COPD patients. I will continue to work with my colleagues to promote public awareness of COPD.
