Dodd Statement on Gas Prices Reaching $4 Per Gallon in CT
May 15, 2008

Senator Chris Dodd released the following statement today on gas prices reaching $4 per gallon in Connecticut.  Dodd is a cosponsor of the Consumer-First Energy Act of 2008, a bill authored by Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) to address the root causes of high gas prices and hold oil companies accountable. Senator Dodd is committed to alleviating the pain at the pump for American consumers and strengthening the nation’s economic, energy and national security.

“Today’s news is another clear sign that it is time for Congress to take a stand for consumers, to protect them from price-gouging and the oil companies who are still posting record profits as American families suffer. Hard-working families in Connecticut and across the nation are taking a major hit to their pocketbooks every time they fill up the tank. It is long past time that we put an end to the tax breaks for oil companies that the Bush Administration clings to, and invest in renewable energy sources that we can develop here at home using the skills of talented American worker.

“I call on the President to sign legislation passed overwhelmingly by both chambers of Congress this week to suspend the filling of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. This simple act would lead to an immediate decrease in the price of oil, providing much needed relief for families in Connecticut and across the country.”
