(WASHINGTON) – In a letter to Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) Transportation Secretary Norm Mineta affirmed his commitment to supporting Sound Transit. The letter was received the night before Secretary Mineta testified before the Appropriations Transportation subcommittee, on which Senator Murray is the highest-ranking Democrat.

Murray was heartened by Mineta's reassurances.

"Few things have as much of an impact on our way of life in the Puget Sound as the brutal traffic congestion. Living in the area, and driving on I-5 every week, I know how bad things are. So I am pleased that Secretary Mineta understands the importance of Sound Transit and remains committed to this project. I look forward to working with Secretary Mineta on this issue."

In the letter to Murray, Mineta wrote, "Development of the Central Link Light Rail Project remains a priority for the Department and I look forward to continuing to work with you to complete it in a mutually acceptable manner."

Murray noted her appreciation for the federal support in light of Sound Transit's recent problems.

"Even though the Transportation Secretary continues to support Sound Transit, local leaders must work quickly to answer the questions leveled by the Secretary and Department of Transportation Inspector General so we don't lose the federal funding in the future," said Murray. "As long as I am in the United States Senate, I will continue to fight to ease traffic congestion in Washington State."
