McKeon Selected Education & the Workforce Committee’s Ranking Republican Member for the 110th Congress, Congratulates Miller on Panel Chairmanship

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-CA) today was selected by his House Republican colleagues to serve as Ranking Republican Member on the Education & the Workforce Committee in the 110th Congress.  McKeon – who first took a seat on the Committee in 1993 – has served as its Chairman since February and led the panel’s Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness since 1995.

McKeon also extended his congratulations to the Committee’s senior Democrat, Rep. George Miller (D-CA), who is slated to chair the Committee when the new Congress begins.  After today’s announcement, McKeon issued the following statement:

“In recent years, our Committee has transformed into a place where colleagues can disagree on principle without being disagreeable in practice, and as a result, we’ve been able to forge some of the House’s most meaningful legislation – strong reforms that are making a real difference for students, workers, and retirees.

“I congratulate my friend and California colleague, Representative Miller, on being selected by his Democrat peers to chair our Committee in the 110th Congress.  He has long been a leading voice on our panel, as well as an effective and thoughtful Member of the House, and I look forward to working with him in his new leadership capacity next year.

“I’m especially eager to join incoming Chairman Miller and others from both sides of the aisle in building on the bipartisan foundation we laid together this year to reauthorize and strengthen the No Child Left Behind Act.  On that and the other issues before us, my Committee Republican colleagues and I are committed to working in a fiscally-responsible way to improve our schools, expand access to college, enhance American competitiveness, promote small business, and protect benefits for working families and retirees.”
