I recognize the importance of programs and services aimed at senior citizens. Originally enacted in 1965, the OAA is our nation’s major vehicle for the delivery of social and nutrition services for older persons. The act supports a wide range of social services and programs for older persons including: supportive services, congregate and home-delivered nutrition services, community service employment, the long-term care ombudsman program, and services to prevent the abuse, neglect and exploitation of older persons.
The Senate Appropriations Committee recently approved its version of the Fiscal Year 2007, Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill. The bill included over $2.9 billion for programs serving older Americans. This amount included $217.6 million for senior volunteer programs, $432.3 million for community service employment for older Americans, $350.6 million for supportive services and centers, $156.1 million for family caregiver support programs and $715 million for senior nutrition programs.
I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to ensure that the needs of elderly Idahoans are met.
