WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sen. John Ensign, R-NV, won unanimous election Tuesday to chair the Republican Policy Committee, which makes him fourth in GOP Senate leadership.
The choice also makes the GOP lawmaker from southern Nevada the highest ranking Republican senator in Nevada history.
"I'm grateful to have the opportunity to take such a leading role in the future of the Republican party as we reunite as a party of fiscal responsibility, limited government and opportunity for everyone," said Ensign.
He said the position will add to Nevada's voice in the Senate, giving him and the people he represents "an influential voice at the negotiating table" so Nevadans' interests will be heard early in the legislative process.
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Ensign has proven a valuable asset to the GOP leadership team, helping shape and define issues involving tax relief and energy.
Ensign replaces Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson of Texas in taking on his new leadership role. She decided against seeking the role again.
