Veterans
The veterans' community in the San Diego region is very large and active. More than 60,000 former service members live in California 's 53rd Congressional District alone. On the House Committee on Veterans Affairs (VA), Susan was instrumental in increasing the maximum limit available to veterans under the VA's home loan program. She has also fought to provide Concurrent Receipt payments to all disabled veterans who retired from military service and to end the inequities facing military spouses eligible for the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP).
In the 110th Congress, Susan is continuing the fight to improve veterans' benefits by sponsoring the Home Ownership for America 's Veterans Act (H.R. 551) to open up California 's CalVet home loan program to newly discharged veterans. She is also working closely with the San Diego Delegation to establish a new veterans' cemetery at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar for veterans living in the San Diego region. Susan is also working to address the unique mental health challenges facing service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and to ensure a healthy transition back to civilian life for them.
