REP. LOEBSACK ADDRESSES CONCERNS OVER THE SAFETY OF FEMA TRAILERS
Loebsack Receives Assurances from FEMA Administrator Paulison that Additional Testing Will Be Done and Alternate Housing is Available

Washington, D.C., Oct 21 - Congressman Dave Loebsack (IA-02) released the following statement on reports of unsafe levels of Formaldehyde being detected in temporary FEMA housing.

“In the wake of the devastating floods, Iowa families continue to struggle as they work to rebuild their lives and homes.  The health and safety of these families must be our number one concern throughout this recovery period, and I find it very troubling that the temporary housing units provided by FEMA may pose serious health risks.

“It was brought to my attention yesterday afternoon that unacceptable levels of Formaldehyde may have been detected in some of the trailers provided to displaced families in Cedar Rapids.  Immediately I took action, and spoke with Bill Vogel, Iowa’s FEMA Director and David Paulison, the national FEMA Administrator.  I have received assurances that additional testing will be done, and that alternate housing is available to anyone who feels their health may be at risk.

“The health, safety, and well-being of flood victims is paramount, and I will continue to work on this matter until it is resolved.  I encourage any resident with questions or concerns about the safety of their temporary housing to contact FEMA at 866-274-4392 during regular business hours from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday-Friday and Saturday from 7:00 AM to Noon.  During non-business hours, residents can contact FEMA’s 24 hour housing maintenance line at 866-640-4489.  As always, my staff is also available to assist anyone seeking additional information, residents can contact my office toll free at 866.914.IOWA.”
