U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings today announced the appointment of Sally Lovejoy as the Special Assistant to the Secretary, serving as the Education Attaché to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

"Sally's years of experience in education and the legislative process will be an asset as she represents the Department of Education in working with UNESCO," Spellings said. "I look forward to working with her in our efforts to support the United Nation's goal for universal primary education."

From 2000 until her appointment, Lovejoy served as the Director of Education and Human Resources Policy for the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Education and the Workforce. From 1993 to 2000, Lovejoy was the Senior Education Policy Advisor for the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

As the Education Attaché to the U.S. Mission to UNESCO, Lovejoy will represent the U.S. Department of Education in support of the education component of UNESCO’s mission and work with Mrs. Bush in her role as the Honorary Chair of the UN Decade on Literacy. She will work with Congress, the White House, and other Federal and private agencies to provide information and analyses from UNESCO and foreign Education Ministries.

UNESCO was formed in 1945 and now consists of 190 member states and six associate members. UNESCO plays an integral role in the UN system and works closely with a wide range of regional and national organizations. As part of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, UNESCO is working to achieve universal primary education by the year 2015.

Sally just celebrated 25 years of service on Capitol Hill, for the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and in several Congressional offices. She received her B.A. in International Politics from Sweet Briar College in Virginia.
