U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings issued the following statement regarding the resignation of Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education Sally Stroup:

Sally has been a trusted and talented adviser to the Department of Education for four years, and her counsel and friendship will be greatly missed. The state of higher education in America is strong - today it is easier to apply for, qualify for, receive and pay back federal student aid - and Sally has done more than her part to make it so.

Sally made key contributions to my Commission on the Future of Higher Education, which is examining how well we are preparing students for the highly competitive 21st century. She also worked for the renewal of the Higher Education Act, as she did in 1998 while working on Capitol Hill.

Now she returns to serve as Deputy Staff Director for the House Education & the Workforce Committee. In this new position, she will continue her work to ensure that every student who chooses to pursue a college degree has the resources and support to do so.
