Technical Abstract: Mesotrione is currently registered on field corn and yellow-kerneled popcorn. It would also be a useful herbicide to reduce the use of atrazine in sweet corn. The objective of our studies were to determine if sweet corn cultivars differed in their tolerance to mesotrione. In one study over 150 cultivars were screened for susceptibility to mesotrione. Approximately 10% of the cultivars were susceptible to mesotrione. These cultivars originated from the same inbred parents, suggesting a genetic component to sweet corn response to mesotrione. In a second study the reponse of susceptible (Polaris, How Sweet It Is, Gallant, and Shogun) and tolerant (GH 2547, GH 2684, GH 7749, and Bonus) cultivars was further studied. Adding atrazine to mesotrione did not increase the injury of susceptible cultivars. The susceptible cultivars were significantly injured by the 1/2X rate but were not killed by the 2X rate of mesotrione.
