Members' Progress Toward Goals

Another way of looking at the achievements of Performance Track members is to view their progress toward the goals they set at the beginning of their membership in the program.

  • For 10 of the 16 indicators shown above, members collectively beat their own goals, with results ranging from 117% to 191% of their initial goals.

  • For four indicators (land and habitat, non-toxic discharges to water, hazardous waste, and materials use), members' collective performance fell short of their goals.

  • In only two cases (toxic discharges to water and PM-10) did the combined efforts of members lead to a net result in the opposite direction of their environmental performance goals. These results were heavily influenced by a few large facilities.

  • Members' progress toward their goals is measured by comparing their reported progress with their original goals. Most members set normalized goals (allowing for changes in production or other changes in activity at the facility), so normalized results are used to measure those members' progress. Some members set absolute goals; in those cases absolute results are used to measure progress.

  • Performance Track encourages members to set challenging "stretch" goals that spur innovation and creative solutions. In general, EPA expects that facilities make progress toward at least 3 of the 4 goals, recognizing that there may be extenuating circumstances that will be dealt with on a case by case basis.
