Demonstration Projects
The majority of EPA's recent investment in the septic (onsite) wastewater field has involved the funding of various types of demonstration projects. There are more than $35 million worth of projects in more than 25 states that demonstrate technologies, management programs, education and training programs and other activities.

-
La Pine, Oregon Demonstration Project. - Ephesus, Virginia: Education and Training - This project consists of developing and implementing an onsite wastewater treatment education and citizen training model program for minority and indigent people. Further, the project goal is to improve septic (onsite) system knowledge among indigent people and to make local health departments aware of their wastewater needs.
- County Official Resource Package - Prepared by the National Association of Counties, this resource package, "The Septic (Onsite/Decentralized Wastewater) Resource Package for County Officials," provides county and local elected officials, planners and health officials with an overview of onsite wastewater facilities. It also lists the benefits of a septic (onsite) wastewater management plan and additional resources.
- Valuing Decentralized Wastewater Technologies: A Catalog of Benefits, Costs, and Economic Analysis Techniques - This report, prepared by the Rocky Mountain Institute, presents information and techniques to help communities save financial resources and improve infrastructure planning and decision making through more complete analysis of technological options.
- Certified Installer of Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems - The National Environmental Health Association has worked with various partner groups to develop a national program to certify installers of onsite wastewater treatment systems. The credential is designed to test the knowledge, skills and abilities needed for the successful installation of an onsite wastewater treatment system.
- La Pine, Oregon - This project demonstrates innovative nitrogen removal technologies, in combination with understanding ground water flow and nitrate fate and transport assessment. The project also offers assistance to the community in developing local ordinances and a management program.
- Indiana: Capacity Center for the Management of Onsite/Decentralized Systems, Inc. - This contains information to promote best management practices of onsite/decentralized cluster systems to solve small rural community wastewater problems.
- National Onsite Demonstration Project (NODP) - This demonstrates the use of alternative, onsite wastewater treatment technologies to protect public health, ensure water quality and sustain the environment in small and rural communities. It is funded through the EPA and is directed by the National Environmental Services Center at West Virginia University.
- National Community Decentralized Wastewater Demonstration Project - Funded by congressional appropriations, this demonstration project targets communities for demonstration of decentralized technologies and management.
- National Decentralized Water Resources Capacity Development Project (NDWRCDP) - This supports research and development to improve our understanding and strengthen the foundations of training and practice in the field of onsite/decentralized wastewater treatment. The project is now managed by the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) and other organizations.
- Water Quality Cooperative Agreement program (WQCA) - This provides assistance agreements with nonprofit institutions funded under the authority of section 104(b)(3) of the Clean Water Act to promote the coordination of environmentally beneficial activities.
