4th National Conference: Nonpoint Source and Stormwater Pollution Education Programs

Overview

In response to the need for better public appreciation and understanding of the impacts of polluted runoff, this conference will provide a unique opportunity to learn and share ideas on nonpoint source and stormwater education strategies. The conference will explore practical, state-of-the-art examples of successful outreach programs. You can meet people with similar objectives and challenges who are concerned about building individual and social capacity to address runoff pollution, and who are working to develop creative information/education programs. This conference will focus on nonpoint source, stormwater (MS4s), watershed protection, and TMDLs.

Intended Audience: Professional staff and volunteers at the municipal, state, and federal levels.

Cost: Conference registration fee of $295 includes many meals and social functions.

Time: 4 days

Course Content: The conference will emphasize projects that are "process-oriented." Process-oriented projects use social marketing techniques to identify target audiences, key messages, and barriers to behavior change, as well as to effectively evaluate the need for the project as well as its outcomes. Conference topics will include:

• Identifying educational objectives and overcoming barriers to behavioral change
• Building individual and social capacity for nonpoint source and stormater programs
• Designing and implementing stormwater public education programs
• Evaluation strategies that measure education program impact
• Innovative utilization of outreach media
• Outreach programs beyond the urban zone (agriculture, forestry, etc.)
• Effective use of demonstrations, special events, and community activities
• Non-traditional outreach approaches
• NPS/stormwater education in K-12 settings

Three specialty pre-conference workshops on Monday, October 17 will explore key education concepts relating to environmental education and outreach programs.
