The term seismic seiche was first coined by Anders Kvale in 1955, to describe oscillation of lake levels in Norway and England caused by the Assam earthquake of August, 1950.

5.8 At least 552 people killed, more than 9,929 injured and 8,300 buildings damaged or destroyed in the Cairo area. Preliminary estimates of damage about 300 million U.S. dollars. Felt in much of Egypt from Alexandria to Aswan and in Israel from Elat to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
