The term seismic seiche was first coined by Anders Kvale in 1955, to describe oscillation of lake levels in Norway and England caused by the Assam earthquake of August, 1950.

Epicenter
6.7 The earthquake was centered near Puerto Armuelles, Panama. The Puerto Armuelles Secondary School reportedly sustained considerable damage, and there was some other minor damage in the area. An estimated $2 million damage was reported to have occurred to petroleum loading facilities in the Puerto Armuelles area. The quake was also felt strongly in southeastern Costa Rica. There were no reports of casualties. A number of moderately strong aftershocks followed, but no additional damage was reported.
