The American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute (ACS GCI) History
The Green Chemistry Institute (GCI) was incorporated in 1997 as a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation devoted to promoting and advancing green chemistry. In January 2001, GCI joined the American Chemical Society (ACS) in an increased effort to address global issues at the intersection of chemistry and the environment.
Over its history, the ACS GCI has worked extensively with the US EPA Green Chemistry Program to promote green chemistry.
The ACS GCI Mission
“The mission of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute (ACS GCI) is to advance the implementation of green chemistry principles into all aspects of the chemical enterprise.”
The ACS GCI promotes green chemistry through
- Research
- Education
- Information dissemination
- Conferences and symposia
- International collaboration
Worldwide interest in green chemistry is reflected in over 20 international chapters currently affiliated with the Institute.
The ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable
The ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable is a partnership between pharmaceutical corporations and the Institute dedicated to integrating green chemistry and green engineering into the global pharmaceutical industry. Together, the members of the Roundtable collaborate to inform and influence research agendas, to incorporate green chemistry principles into education, and to develop tools to facilitate the implementation of green chemistry and green engineering in industry. Membership is open to all pharmaceutical companies committed to the integration of green chemistry and green engineering into the business of drug discovery and production of small and large molecule pharmaceuticals.
For more information about the ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable send email to gcipr@acs.org.
The ACS GCI Information Resources
Green Chemistry Resource Exchange
The Institute developed the Green Chemistry Resource Exchange as a place for users to exchange green chemistry information resources. Development was part of a cooperative agreement with the U.S. EPA Design for the Environment program.
Green Chemistry Listserv
The Institute listserv is an e-mail discussion group. The listserv facilitates communication and information sharing about green chemistry and engineering. To join, send e-mail to gcilist@acs.org.
