Equipment Used
vibratingcore
Purpose
Provide geological expertise to H.L.Hunley archeologists to reveal and interpret the sediment layers around the H.L.Hunley submarine and the USS Housatonic warship.
Information to be Derived
Stratigraphic interpretations, photographs, and subsamples for lab analysis of sedimentation rates using Pb210
Summary
Collected seven vibracores total: five for our geologic interpretation and two to be sent off for stress test analysis. Collected May 25, 1999
Notes
The coordinates were considered top secret so they were not kept by the USGS. The water depth was not kept either for protection from scavenger divers.
Bradford pneumatic vibrator, powered by two air compressors delivering 35
standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) at 100 pounds per square inch (psi) each.
The vibracore rig is used aluminum barrels 3 inches in diameter by 20 ft in
length. Brass core-catchers were riveted at the base of each barrel to ensure
complete recovery of the sediments.
Got Help? For 990FA01, we would appreciate any information on -- analog materials, contract, days at sea, dive count, funding, kms of navigation, national plan, NGDC Info, owner, project number, publications, scanned materials, seismic description, station count, station description, submersible, tabulated info.
