Purpose
Sustainable Seas Expedition - multidisciplinary cruise with FSU, NOAA,
and National Geographic. USGS objective is sediment sampling to ground truth
previously collected sidescan data and make observations of benthic habitats
using DeepWorker one-person submarines with video cameras.
Summary
Sediment samples are being analysed for texture and carbonate content
in the USGS/Woods Hole sediment lab. Sediment samples were obtained mainly from
Yellowtail Reef ("Pinnacles" area) and within the Madison-Swanson and Steamboat
Lumps Reserves, near the shelf-edge. Video data obtained during the submarine
dives are the property of National Geographic Society and NOAA, and are archived
there.
Notes
GORDON GUNTER used with submersible DEEPWORKER.
