Flue Gas Cleaning

APTB's flue gas cleaning program supports New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) regulations development and has fostered the development of technologies that today are considered industry standards. These include both dry and wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) technologies, PM control technologies, and flue gas NOx removal. Low-cost retrofit technology and innovative improvements have resulted in a number of patents, licenses, and Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) with private industry to develop these new concepts for market. Fine PM technologies include electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) with optimized charging and collection (Super ESP) and electrostatically stimulated fabric filtration (ESFF). Sulfur dioxide (SO2) technologies include combined spray drying and ESP (E-SOx) and calcium silicate duct injection (ADVACATE). Facilities available to conduct this research include two pilot plants, a pilot ESP, and two bench-scale mercury absorption reactors.
