Description:

Objective:

The objective of this research project is to determine the rate and extent of chlorinated ethane degradation in response to changing redox conditions of shallow groundwater systems.

Approach:

Discerning the relationships between the geochemical environment and microbial processes is an important step in evaluating the capabilities and limitations of natural attenuation of volatile chlorinated compounds. This research project will involve the use of column microcosms with controlled redox conditions, carbon sources, electron acceptors, and nutrients to study the effects of changing redox conditions on the ability of a microbial community to degrade chlorinated ethenes. Kinetic parameters will be obtained from these studies for various redox conditions, and the lag time for initiation of reductive dechlorination upon return to reducing conditions will be determined.
