MDNR is asking anglers to continue to be vigilant about not spreading whirling, other disease and invasive organisms. For information on how you can help look below this article. A detailed synopsis of our 2007 whirling disease testing results and related information is now available at this site. For more information click on this link.

DNR would also like to thank The Conservation Fund’s Freshwater Institute in Shepherdstown, W.Va, the institute donated over than 26,000 adult rainbow trout to the State of Maryland in 2008. The donation made it possible for many folks to catch a trout of a life time from one of our many special trout management areas. To read the entire press release please go to www.dnr.state.md.us/dnrnews/pressrelease2009/011209a.html.

The Hatchery personnel was able to move some trout out early! On January 12th a crew broke through the ice at a number of ponds in order to get a head start on the pre-season, another batch donated from the Freshwater Institute is expected to be released next week, weather permitting. Go to our full trout stocking page for all the details!

The DNR trout stocking program is funded entirely by the sale of freshwater fishing licenses, trout stamps and Federal Sportfish Restoration Program (Wallop-Breaux) funds which are generated by anglers and boaters’ tax dollars.

 Proposed Crab Regulations Public Hearing
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has scheduled two public hearings to discuss proposed crab regulations. The first public hearing is at 6:00pm on January 27, 2009 in the meeting room of the Queen Anne's County Library Kent Island Branch, 200 Library Circle, Stevensville, Maryland 21666. The second public hearing is at 6:00pm on February 4, 2009 in Fellowship Hall at Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 Rowe Blvd., Annapolis, MD 21401.

The proposed action modifies commercial and recreational regulations on female catch and sets commercial bushel limits by license type. Recreational crabbing licensing provisions are modified and registration for previously unlicensed crabbers would be required. There are additional modifications to other rules and the January 16, 2009 Maryland Register, www.dsd.state.md.us, or the Fisheries Service website, www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/regulations/proposedregulations.html, should be consulted for the full text of the proposals.

 Savage River Reservoir Maintenance Update
Anglers interested in fishing the Savage River Trophy Trout Area below the Savage River Reservoir should be aware of the following update report made by the Upper Potomac River Commission (UPRC). The UPRC personnel completed necessary annual maintenance within the Savage Reservoir Dam during the week of December 15th, and will resume fishable flows in the Savage River tailwater. The reservoir will be allowed to refill to a target level yet to be determined. Once the target elevation is achieved, releases from the dam will target 55 cubic foot per second. However, trying to maintain the target reservoir elevation may require higher releases up to 100 cubic feet per second. Anglers may call a recorded message from the Baltimore District of the Army Corps of Engineers at 410–962-7687 for current flow conditions and for the projected three day release schedule.

Maryland’s Task Force on Fisheries Management submits its 2008 Legislative
 Report to Governor Martin O’Malley

Maryland’s Task Force on Fisheries Management recently submitted its 2008 Legislative Report to Governor Martin O’Malley, members of the Maryland General Assembly, and Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary John R. Griffin.

“Maryland’s diverse fishery resources are irreplaceable, often serving as the center of our local economies, culture and quality of life,” said Governor Martin O’Malley. “We appreciate the many hours volunteered by the task force’s members to work with our fishery managers to improve the way we manage and protect fish resources across the state.”

The Task Force’s report offers more than 30 specific recommendations on habitat preservation and restoration, fisheries stock monitoring and assessment, data management, fishery management, legal issues, and enforcement.

During the 2009 session of the Maryland General Assembly, DNR expects to request legislation to implement some of the Task Force’s recommendations.

Governor O’Malley established the 17-member task force, comprised of scientists, recreational anglers, watermen, charter boat captains and conservationists, last November. The Fisheries Management Reform Act (Senate Bill 1012) charged the Task Force with developing new strategies to better manage Maryland’s valuable fishery resources.

Marylander's Grow Oysters - Govenor's Pilot Program Kicks Off on the
 Tred Avon River
If you live along the Tred Avon River, you can be part of an exciting pilot project to grow oysters at your pier and to help create a living, diverse, oyster reef community. Not only will more oysters be placed in the Chesapeake Bay as a result of your efforts, but the rejunentated oyster reef will become a natural underwater ecosystem for all sorts of aquatic life.

The goal is to place 1,000 oyster cages at piers by the end of October, with four cages per pier. There is no charge for those who participate in this 2008 pilot project, but there are rewards both personal and ecological.

The Marylanders Grow Oysters Project was established by Governor Martin O’Malley, and is being managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources in conjunction with Talbot County, the Oyster Recovery Partnership, the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and the Maryland Department of Corrections.

To read more about the Marylanders Grow Oysters Project or to sign up for some oysters, go to www.dnr.maryland.gov/oysterproject/.

Don’t Play Johnny Appleseed with Fish!

You may think stocking your favorite fish in a local stream or pond is a great idea, but think twice! Moving fish to waters where they were not historically found may disrupt the ecosystem and damage existing fish populations in that area. Like snakeheads, non-native fish can be very damaging. Maryland Fisheries Service is concerned about the potential impacts of two non-native catfish – the blue catfish and the flathead catfish. Both have been found in some Maryland waters.

Click here to view an advisory on these species and learn about the impacts of introducing these species. To learn more about the laws and regulations governing fish movements in Maryland, view our fact sheet “What Can I Stock or Release into Maryland Waters?”

To learn more about invasive species or what steps Maryland's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has taken to help prevent invasive species from being introduced go to www.dnr.state.md.us/invasives/index.asp.

 National Saltwater Angler Registry

On December 23, 2008, NOAA announced the adoption of the final rule to implement the national saltwater angler registry program. The final rule defers the requirement for anglers to be registered with NOAA until January 1, 2010. NOAA had originally proposed that registration be required beginning Jan. 1, 2009, but based on public input decided to give states another year to put in place their own data collection systems. Click here to see what this means for Maryland anglers.
