Use of Science in Decision Making and Conflict Resolution

Research Task: 8327CMA.1.0
Task Manager: Nina Burkardt

Although scientific information provides guidance to natural resource managers and decision makers, deciding how to connect management problems with appropriate scientific studies is sometimes difficult. This task will study the processes for making those connections and will test hypotheses about the use of science in decision making and conflict resolution. The objectives of this research are to assist natural resource professionals in the Department of the Interior by providing up-to-date, peer-reviewed research findings on how science is used in decision-making, and to publish these findings in the peer-reviewed literature. The initial phases of this task involve conducting a literature review on the use of science in decision making, in particular natural resource decision making, to determine what is and is not understood about these questions. From that literature review we will develop testable hypotheses and identify potential case studies for hypothesis testing.
