EMSs at EPA’s Own Facilities
Many Regional EPA offices have implemented EMSs in their facilities.

EPA has ten regional offices, each of which is responsible for several states and territories. To get information about your region, select your state or territory from the list or map below.

EPA Regional EMS Initiatives

EPA Region 1 (New England)
Region 1 is actively promoting the use of EMSs in various industry sectors, has offered training to colleges and universities, and is piloting EMS prototypes for K-12 schools. Additionally, they have implemented an EMS at the Boston office and the New England Regional Laboratory in Chelmsford, MA.

EPA Region 2 (New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and Tribal Nations)
EMS work in Region 2 includes a healthcare guide from the Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center and an implementation guide from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

EPA Region 3 (Mid-Atlantic Federal Facilities)
Region 3 has made all of its EMS information available for use by EPA staff as well as external stakeholders. The region hopes to be an example for, and to assist others, develop their own EMS by offering for use all or any part of their information and documentation.

EPA Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Tribal Nations)
Region 5 is promoting and encouraging the use of EMS for public and private sector facilities as a vehicle to provide compliance with legal and other requirements, continuous improvement and efficiency in operations and to prevent polution.

EPA Region 6 (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas)
Region 6 has specific information on its EMS implementation plans, as well as other resources.

EPA Region 7 (Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska)
Region 7 has developed EMS for its main office and its Science and Technology Center in Kansas City, KS.

EPA Region 8 (Mountains and Plains States)
Region 8 is working to:

  1. Reduce the use of natural resources and dependence on materials extracted from the Earth;
  2. Reduce purchase, use, and release of toxic substances;
  3. Ensure that decisions and actions protect all communities and people; and
  4. Increase staff knowledge about EMS and advocate EMS to others.

EPA Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, the Pacific Islands, and Tribal Nations)
Region 9 is involved in a series of pilot projects to evaluate the impacts of EMSs, including work with the metal finishing industry and small businesses such as industrial laundries.

EPA Region 10 (Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington)

The Region 10 EMS website provides information specific to the Pacific Northwest and Alaska on EMS for businesses, associations, governmental agencies and the public.
