What: Be a part of history! Celebrate National Public Lands Day by helping to build the Centennial Trail from the Visitor Center to the west end of the Upper Dam.

Bring gloves and water. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty.

Where: Meet at the Visitor Center.

Lectures held usually on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7 PM at the refuge Visitor Center.

Oral History Project

(Photo courtest of U.S. Bureau of Reclamation)Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, in cooperation with Friends of Deer Flat and 10 other partners, is gathering oral histories about the refuge and reservoir in association with a Preserve America grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

Did you work for the CCC or WPA at Deer Flat NWR during the 1930s? Are you a long-term refuge neighbor or employee? Do you have a long-term history of recreating at Lake Lowell?

Then we may want to interview you about your history to fill in historical gaps, provide multiple perspectives, and enrich the story of Deer Flat. Contact us at 208-467-9278 if you are interested in participating.

Scout Day
Take a hike! Make a nature craft. Scout day gives you the chance to meet other scouts, have fun, and earn wildlife badges for girl scouts or cub scouts. Usually held the first Saturday of each month from 1-3 PM at the refuge Visitor Center. Download a flyer to post where scouts will see!

What: Remove invasive and noxious weeds to improve wildlife habitat. Bring gloves and water. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty.
When: 9-11 AM on the 3rd Saturday of every month between March and October.
Where: Meet at the Visitor Center. Weed removal occurs all around Lake Lowell. There may be special visits to the Snake River Islands in the summer.

Reading at the Refuge
Tim Mitchell reads about Percival the caterpillar to young refuge visitorsPreschoolers (and their parents!) are invited to Reading at the Refuge. Children listen to a wildlife-related story and participate in related activities that will help them learn about the environment. Refreshments are served. Reading at the Refuge is held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 10 A.M. and the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 2 P.M. Programs are held at the refuge Visitor Center at the west end of the Upper Dam at Lake Lowell.
